FIELD NOTE 002 / BUILDER / MAY 01, 2026
WHY I STOPPED TRUSTING
AI HYPE MERCHANTS.
I have shipped real software. I know the smell of a person selling a thing they have not yet built.
I have been in marketing since 1999. I have built and sold an agency. The AI hype industry has that smell.
There is a class of operator who has discovered that the prompt is easier to package than the product. They sell the prompt because they cannot ship the product.
I am not against AI. I run AI agents in production. I write code with AI every week.
What I am against is the sleight of hand. The thing where someone presents a screen recording of a chatbot and pretends it is a business.
If your AI demo cannot run for thirty days without you in the room, it is not real.
If your agent needs perfectly clean inputs in perfect sequence, it is not autonomous. It is a recipe with extra steps.
If your prompt library is the entire product, you are selling sheet music to people who do not own instruments.
I am building. I will share the receipts when they exist.
